This is a neighbourhood minyan and zmanim board. It is not a business, it sells nothing, and it makes no money from anybody's information. There are no adverts, no tracking pixels, no analytics accounts, and no cookies. What follows is simply an honest account of what the site stores and who can see it.
You can use most of the site without giving anything
Reading minyan times, zmanim, the calendar, shiurim and mazel tovs requires no account, no sign-in, and no details of any kind. Information is only stored about you if you choose to post something, ask for a tenth, answer a call, or turn on notifications.
What is stored, and why
- A mazel tov you post — the simcha, the family name and your message are public, which is the point of posting them. Your name and phone number are stored but never shown publicly; they exist so an administrator can reach you if something posted under your name has to be dealt with. The database itself now refuses to hand those two fields to the website, so they cannot be read by a visitor even indirectly.
- Calling for a tenth — the shul, the tefilah, how many are needed and any note are public while the call is open. The caller's phone number is stored privately for the gabbaim and is not readable by the public.
- Answering a call for a tenth — see the box below.
- Notifications — if you turn them on, your browser's push address, which shuls you follow and which alerts you chose are stored, along with your browser's user-agent string. This is what makes a notification reach the right device. Turning notifications off in the app stops it.
- Verifying a phone number — a number and name may be stored so that posting works without a queue, and so that a number that abuses it can be blocked.
- Reporting a problem — what you report, and your name if you give one.
- Counting usage — a running total per day of things like "someone opened the Shabbos sheet". A number and nothing else: no IP address, no identifier, no record of any individual person.
What stays on your own device
Some things are kept in your browser's own storage and are not sent anywhere unless you use the feature they belong to: which shuls you star, which shuls you want tenth alerts for, your alert settings, a randomly generated device id, and your name and number if you asked the site to remember them so you don't have to retype them. Clearing your browser's site data removes all of it.
Who else sees anything
The site is built on ordinary services, and using it means your browser talks to them:
- Hebcal — zmanim and Hebrew dates are fetched by your browser directly from hebcal.com, so Hebcal sees your IP address, as with visiting any website.
- Google Fonts — the typefaces load from Google's servers, so Google sees your IP address.
- Supabase — the database and the functions behind the site.
- Vercel — the hosting that serves these pages.
Nothing is sold, rented, shared for advertising, or handed to anybody else. There is nobody to sell it to and no interest in doing so.
How long things last
A mazel tov shows on the site for thirty days and then stops appearing. A call for a tenth disappears when it expires or when the shul confirms they have one. Records may remain in the database after they stop being displayed; ask and they will be deleted.
Having something removed
Email admin@northwoodmere.org and say what you want taken down or deleted — a mazel tov, your phone number, a response to a call, anything at all. You do not need to give a reason. Notifications can be switched off yourself on the Alerts tab at any time.
Children
The site is meant for the neighbourhood generally and is not directed at children. Nothing here asks a child for information, and there is no account to create.
Changes
If what the site does changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top will say when. Questions about any of it: admin@northwoodmere.org.
